OEM fault codes explained: SPN, FMI, and what to do about them.

SPN 3936, FMI 15. What does it actually mean, and does the machine need to stop right now? A field guide to J1939 fault codes.

Any diesel construction machine built in the last fifteen years speaks J1939 — the SAE standard for engine and vehicle communication. When something goes wrong, the ECU throws a fault code in the shape SPN.FMI, and every third-party telematics dashboard on earth surfaces that code raw. If you have ever squinted at an alert reading 'SPN 3936, FMI 15' and wondered whether to send the machine back to the yard, this article is for you.

What SPN and FMI mean.

SPN — Suspect Parameter Number — identifies which parameter is faulty. It is a number between 1 and around 520,000. SPN 190 is engine speed. SPN 100 is engine oil pressure. SPN 3936 is a diesel particulate filter parameter. The SPN tells you what.

FMI — Failure Mode Identifier — tells you how it failed. It is a number between 0 and 31. Some common ones:

  • FMI 0: data valid but above normal range — most severe
  • FMI 1: data valid but below normal range — most severe
  • FMI 2: data intermittent or incorrect
  • FMI 3: voltage above normal / shorted high
  • FMI 4: voltage below normal / shorted low
  • FMI 5: current below normal / open circuit
  • FMI 15: data valid but above normal range — least severe
  • FMI 17: data valid but below normal range — least severe
  • FMI 31: condition exists

How to triage in 60 seconds.

  1. FMI 0/1/14 → stop the machine. These are the severe range codes.
  2. FMI 15/16/17/18 → finish the current task, then bring the machine in.
  3. FMI 2/3/4/5 → sensor or wiring fault. Machine can usually continue; log the code and schedule the check.
  4. FMI 31 → informational. Read the specific SPN.

'SPN 3936, FMI 15' — the example in the alert — is a DPF after-treatment temperature slightly above range at the least-severe level. It usually means the machine needs a parked regeneration within a couple of hours; it does not mean stop now.

OEM extensions.

On top of J1939, every OEM overlays its own DTCs. CAT uses CID/FMI pairs; Volvo has its own text codes; Komatsu maps to E-codes. Any decent construction fleet management software will translate the OEM's own dictionary into the same triage severity above, so a yard manager doesn't have to memorise three.
